Experience

Tutoring Experience: I have 11 years of experience teaching ESL. I tutored many international students/expatriates one-on-one and I also taught a number of group classes. Most of my tutored students were Mexican, German, French, Brazilian or Japanese expatriates living in southeast Michigan (metropolitan Detroit area) while working for local automotive companies on long-term corporate assignments. My students in group classes were from all parts of the world and attended either evening Adult Education Program courses or college/university courses at 4 local colleges/universities. Tutoring Approach: I like one-on-one tutoring the best, because I like to give each student the specific help he or she needs to improve his or her individual English language skills. I explain to students all of the various skills they can work on, and then let students decide what's most important to them. I have taught grammar, vocabulary, street talk/colloquial speech, pronunciation, idioms, cultural reading, phrasal verbs, and TOEFL prep. There are many excellent textbooks and ESL learning tools/materials available from which students can choose to help facilitate their ESL learning. It's important for ESL students to have plenty of time for one-on-one conversation with their tutor. One-on-one classes are also a great way for students to learn about local sites of interest and local customs (season by season) from a tutor native to the area. I've spent a lot of time acting as a Michigan tour guide and social chairman, planning extra-curricular events for my ESL students so that they can become better acquainted with their new home, even if it's a temporary one.
